My first Juice Fast was in 1994, during a trip to the USA. I went for an entire 72 hours, just on juices, and thought it was an incredible achievement, as fasting is difficult to actually 'get started' with.
The Lent of 2007 was spent fasting on juices and enjoying two pieces of toast with olive oil and peanut butter each day at around 3pm. Added to this were some Kavli Crispy Thins, a dry, crunchy, wafer thin biscuit available at leading supermarkets in Australia. A couple of these are excellent with a cup of Peppermint tea to allay hunger cravings or dizziness/faintness between juice drinks. I wasn't sure I could go the entire Lent, but I did it! It's very difficult to convince people that one is not hungry, while on these fasts. I had also discovered the amazing herbal powder "Herbal Fiberblend", which definitely helped with this regime. By the Fourth Sunday in Lent, I had lost 11 kilos and had more energy than I could remember. IN fact, I would leap out of bed at 3:30am or 4am in the mornings for most of that Lent and go for walks through the still, quiet streets of Maylands, Perth, where I was living at the time.
The primary reason for fasting would have to be spiritual first, health second. It is an interior journey of mortification of those things that cause us to fall most often. It is the vehicle for yearly spiritual rejuvenation. Saint Basil the Great has this to say: “Turning away from all wickedness means keeping our tongue in check, restraining our anger, suppressing evil desires and avoiding all gossip, lying and swearing.... abstain from these things – herein lies the true value of the fast.”
In the first of three Homilies he gave on 'The Lenten Fast', he also says: "Fasting is an ancient gift, which does not grow old or become outmoded, but is ever renewed and flourishes with vigor."
Juice fasting is worth attempting, even in smaller steps, and fasting with Holy Mother Church is more powerful than just doing our own thing any other time of the year. There is more nutrition in a day of juices, than you would get in a week of 'eating'.
It is also extremely useful to take the 'Great Fast' approach to Lent. This is not so as hard as it sounds. Just cut out meat, eggs, fish and dairy. The body cannot keep going year after year after year, with endless food being digested, without the system eventually becoming overloaded.
The Herbal Fiberblend powder can work wonders in clearing out compacted, putrified waste matter. You can buy it here: pems.com.au/fiberblend.php One canister costs $50 approximately with postage.
Here is an extremely good website dedicated to Juice Fasting - caution, the author is a protestant, so proceed with care. However, the information on fasting is very well presented.
